Soliciting proposals of assistance to conduct research on food web structure and trophic linkages in the Colorado River in Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center (GCMRC), U.S. Geological Survey, is soliciting proposals of assistance to conduct research on the aquatic food web of the Colorado River. Previous research provides a clear picture of food web structure in the upper reaches of the Colorado River Ecosystem (CRE), but considerable uncertainty remains regarding the food web structure and trophic linkages at downstream reaches. The purpose of this solicitation is to initiate collaborative research with GCMRC scientists that will identify food web structure and trophic pathways that are of importance to both native and non-native fishes throughout the CRE.
The CRE is defined as the Colorado River mainstem corridor, tributary streams, and adjacent terrestrial habitats, that are located between the forebay of Glen Canyon Dam (GCD) and the western boundary of Grand Canyon National Park, a distance of approximately 293 river miles. Access to the CRE is extremely limited and consists of vehicle access at the upper and lower end of the CRE, scattered foot paths that descend several thousand vertical feet into the CRE, or boat-based river trips that are launched from the upper end of the CRE and travel the entire length of the CRE. GCMRC will provide all the logistical support (i.e., vehicles, boats and skilled boatmen, food, camping gear, research sampling and collection equipment) required to conduct this research.
The closing date for applications is July 15, 2005. Period of performance for this collaborative effort will be from one to three years. Initial funding will be for one year, and may or may not be renewable annually on the basis of available funding and adequate progress. Anticipated funding is ~$100-200k per year, with an additional ~$85,000 annually for logistical support (i.e., river trips, equipment, etc.). Participation is open to all U.S. and non-U.S. educational institutions, industry, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. Pre-proposal open meeting
GCMRC scientists will convene a pre-proposal meeting to answer questions from, and initiate a dialog with, persons interested in responding to this solicitation. This meeting is not mandatory; however, all potential respondents are strongly encouraged to attend. Meeting minutes will be posted on the GCMRC website for those unable to attend. The meeting will be held at a meeting room in Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on June 6, 2005 from noon-3pm. Theodore Kennedy, Barb Ralston, Ted Melis, and possibly others, from GCMRC will convene the meeting.
